LAHORE: Recent trends have shown that breast cancer is increasing at an alarming rate and Pakistan has the highest rate of the disease in Asia, said University of Health Sciences (UHS) Vice Chancellor Dr Junaid Sarfraz Khan.

He was speaking at an MoU singing ceremony to create awareness on breast cancer among Pakistani women. Dr Junaid and Pink Ribbon Pakistan Chief Executive Officer Omer Aftab signed the MoU.

“I strongly believe that it is the right of every woman to learn about the potentially fatal disease and society must support the cause,” he stressed.

The aim of the MoU was for the two organisations to become strategic partners and create widespread awareness of the dangers associated with the severity of the ailment which can lead to death. It can also be rooted out of the patient if detected early.

Under the agreement, UHS will extend support in research and development on different aspects of breast cancer in the country. Moreover, UHS and Pink Ribbon will jointly organise seminars and find a common ground to create awareness and break cultural taboos which prevent women from consulting doctors.

He further stressed this was a large social issue which needed immediate measures.

“We will use all our considerable resources to ensure the success of the awareness campaign. Some extra efforts will be made to conduct meaningful research in this field.
