Tanneries oppose two-day weekly holiday
Exporter says economy will collapse.
KARACHI:
Pakistan Tanners Association (PTA) South Zone Chairman Aziz Ahmed has strongly opposed the idea of two-weekly off for energy conservation.
In a press statement on Monday, he said that the Pakistan’s economy was already in its lowest ebb, whilst many sectors were facing sheer crisis; therefore, the decision to observe two-days off in a week may result in total collapse of the industrial sector, and especially exports would have to suffer most.
He said the decision last year proved to be a failure and the government could not conserve any type of energy. “This decision would only multiply problems and hamper business and industrial activities and the government would not be able to achieve any desired result except further hurting the country’s economy,” Ahmed stated.
He urged the government not to implement the proposal and take appropriate measures to address the energy crisis. He also urged the government to consider alternative measures for saving energy and enhancing the capacity of electricity generating units.
He suggested that if the two holidays in a week was necessary then the export and import-related government offices should be exempted from it, to avoid financial losses to the national exchequer.
