KARACHI: Governor Mohammad Zubair distributed laptops among 40 MPhil and PhD students at a ceremony held at Karachi University on Thursday.

"The graduates from Karachi University are a great asset to the country. I feel honoured to visit my alma mater as its chancellor," he said while addressing the inauguration ceremony of the Prime Minister Laptop Scheme Phase-III at Dr AQ Khan Institute of Biotechnology & Genetic Engineering auditorium.

Zubair, who is also the chancellor of the KU, said the KU is a premier institution of the country, which produces students who are recognised all over the world. "I feel nostalgic recalling how beautiful the university used to be in the 1970s," he said, adding that as chancellor, he will take all the possible steps to uplift the varsity.

KU Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Muhammad Ajmal Khan welcomed the governor. "The ranking of our university used to be so high that no other institution could match its prestige," he said. "We have grown to 54 departments and 21 institutions with more than 850 trained faculty members striving to provide [good] quality education."

The ongoing load-shedding in Karachi did not spare the occasion. All the proceedings at the event came to a sudden halt once when the electricity supply was disrupted.
