RAWALPINDI: The Punjab government has appointed Dr Muhammad Umer as acting vice-chancellor of newly established Rawalpindi Medical University (RMC) although senior doctors have termed the appointment as violation of relevant rules and regulations.

After promulgating RMU ordinance 2017, the Governor Punjab on Friday issued notification for appointment of Dr Umer as acting VC of the university for six months.

Though a good number of doctors and students of erstwhile Rawalpindi Medical College welcomed the appointment of Dr Umer as the new VC, many doctors raised questions on the decision of the government.

According to the notification, the governor has appointed Dr Umer, RMC principal and professor of medicine, as acting VC till the appointment of a regular VC.

Discussions with doctors at Holy Family Hospital (HFH) revealed that the doctors considered the appointment against the relevant rules and regulations.

They said that Dr Umer was to retire on May 10 and was appointed as VC just a day before his age of superannuation.
