Andy Rubin, who is credited for building the world’s most popular mobile operating system, is now making his very own smartphone and has just given us a glimpse of what the upcoming device would look like.

Apple launches iPhone 7, 7 Plus in red

The Android creator tweeted a picture of the new smartphone revealing only the corner of the phone where battery, time and network information is displayed. However, what’s more interesting is that the device seems to have a bezel less design and looks very similar to Xiaomi's Mi MIX concept released last year.

Rubin's company, Essential Products, focuses on creating tablets, smartphones and mobile software and the new smartphone would be the first inline as the company tries to build connected products. The company is also reported working on a proprietary version of Apple's 3D Touch as well as magnetic charging accessories.

Bezel less smartphones have proven to be a difficult area even for some of the manufacturers in the industry. The device requires major design changes over conventional smartphones such as integrating the microphone and home keys in the phone's display and moving the front camera to a newer location.

Rubin’s new smartphone, if successful, could then prove to be a game-changer for the smartphone industry and would introduce a new competitor in the Apple-Samsung dominated market.

Essential Products is expected to unveil its flagship smartphone in mid-2017.
