Man sets wife on fire over domestic dispute

BAHAWALPUR: A five-year-old girl was mauled to death by stray dogs while a man lit his wife on fire in different incidents in Bahawalpur on Wednesday.

Rescue officials said Aashiq Rasool’s five-year-old daughter Bushra was playing outside the house along with her sisters when stray dogs attacked her. As a result, she suffered severe injuries and was shifted to the health centre in Feroza for treatment. However, she could not survive and succumbed to injuries.

Meanwhile, civil society activists demanded the government to register case against district health department officials and take action against them for their negligence in controlling increasing dog bite incidents.

Earlier in 2016, a five-year-old boy was attacked by a stray dog in Lahore.

The victim, identified as Ahad Asif, was rushed to the Jinnah Hospital for treatment. Doctors at the hospital said the boy sustained injuries on his face and head. “The boy was bleeding profusely when he was rushed to the emergency ward,” an official said.

Man sets wife on fire

A man set her wife on fire as she failed to give birth to a child. A police official of Taranda Muhammad Panah police station told The Express Tribune accused Muhammad Ahmad set his wife Ayesha on fire for not giving birth to a child. As a result, she suffered 80% burn injuries and was shifted to Bahawal Victoria Hospital for treatment.

The official maintained, “Ahmad and Ayesha had an argument over the matter. However, when the arguments escalated Ahmad set her ablaze.”

He said the police have registered the case against the accused after recording the statement of the victim and started proceedings.

Earlier, a 22-year-old woman was set alight by her brother in-law in Shadbagh, Lahore. Police said 23-year-old Myra*, a resident of Shakargarh, and Waqas Ali, a resident of Bhagatpura, married on their own will two years ago. In a bid to take revenge, Myra’s brother-in-law Ali locked poured petrol on her and set her alight.
