The Punjab government on Tuesday denied having made the hijab mandatory for girls at the province's colleges.

"This is absolutely wrong news. No such policy [has been announced] by the government of Punjab," it said on twitter.

Some sections of the media reported that the Islamic headscarf had been made mandatory. It also said that female students who wear the veil will get an attendance concession of five per cent if they are unable to meet the 65 per cent mark.

The recommendation was reportedly made at a meeting in Lahore led by the Punjab Higher Education Minister Raza Ali Gilani.

Meanwhile, Aseefa Bhutto criticised the alleged move, saying there was no relation between wearing a headscarf and attaining good grades.

Mohni | 7 years ago | Reply This reminds me of Zia era, when we were asked to cover our heads. I and many girls hated that order and we used wear duppata but not on our heads. But duppata after all was our culture. Whose culture is hijab? How come Arabanization represent Ilslam?
