ISLAMABAD: Five hardcore terrorists belonging to the banned Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) were executed at Kohat Jail on Wednesday.

They were tried by the military courts and convicted for their involvement in acts of terrorism, said a statement issued by Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR).

Military courts, which were established under the National Action Plan (NAP) in the wake of the horrific attack at the Army Public School in Peshawar in December 2014, handed down the death sentence to 161 terrorists before they were expired on January 7. However, before the latest executions, only 13 were hanged.

The delay in executions is primarily attributed to the appeals filed by convicts before the Supreme Court.

According to the details released by the military’s media wing, the five terrorists hanged on Wednesday were Shoukat Ali, Imdadullah, Sabir Shah, Khandan and Anwar Ali. All of them were members of the TTP.

Shoukat Ali was sentenced to death for his involvement in attacking law enforcers and armed forces which resulted in death and injuries to soldiers. He admitted his offences before the magistrate and the trial court. He was tried on five charges and sentenced to death.

Imdadullah was convicted for destroying an educational institution in Buner and attacking law enforcers which resulted in death and injuries to soldiers. Sabir Shah was involved in attacks on armed forces which resulted in the death of soldiers. Khandan was also handed a death sentence for being behind an attack on armed forces which resulted in death and injuries to soldiers.

Anwar Ali, who was also executed, was involved in attacking Armed Forces which resulted in death and injuries to soldiers. He admitted his offences before the magistrate and the trial court.  He was tried on three charges and awarded death sentence.
