Sindh High Court asks LEAs to file comments on missing persons' whereabouts
Court issues notices to authorities, gives them two weeks
KARACHI:
The Sindh High Court (SHC) issued on Monday notices to the provincial home secretary, the Sindh IG, the Rangers provincial director-general and others, to file comments within two weeks in cases relating to the alleged disappearance of four men.
A two-judge bench member, headed by Justice Syed Muhammad Farooq Shah, was hearing four separate petitions seeking recovery of the alleged missing persons.
The petitions were filed by Humaira Sami, Zahra Bibi, Lubna Bibi and Gul Deedar. They had named the provincial home secretary, heads of police and paramilitary force and SHOs of Liaquatabad, Korangi, Surjani and Malir police stations as respondents.
The petitioner, Humaira, said her husband Muhammad Sami was allegedly taken into custody by the Rangers personnel when he went to the market in Liaquatabad on February 23. The petitioner, Zahra, also alleged that her husband, Muhammad Umar, was detained by the paramilitary force's personnel from Korangi on same day.
Missing persons: Families demand govt to ensure safe return of loved ones
Another petitioner, Lubna, alleged that the Rangers personnel had picked up her husband, Mogheezur Rehman from Surjani Town on February 24. In another plea, petitioner, Gul, said her son, Hanzla, was taken away by personnel of the law enforcement agencies from Malir on February 17 this year.
The petitioners contended that authorities of the law enforcement agencies' were not disclosing any information on whereabouts of the missing persons, whose detention, without assigning any lawful reason, was a violation of the constitutional provisions.
Therefore, they pleaded the court direct the respondents to produce the missing persons in the court and disclose details of cases, if any, against them.
After hearing initial arguments, the bench issued notices to the provincial home secretary, the inspector general, the Rangers director-general and SHOs of the relevant police stations to file their comments within two weeks.
