KARACHI: More than a thousand employees of the Karach Electric Supply Company (KESC) staged a demonstration outside Karachi Press Club against company authorities on Monday.

The protestors complained that the 2,000 of the 4,700 workers who were reinstated at KESC were not being given any work.

The protesters accused the KESC authorities of forcing the workers to resign and blocked the road outside the press club.

Meanwhile, KESC officials denied all such allegations.

Earlier in the year, in an attempt to tighten its belt, KESC had laid off 4,300 employeeson January 19, after first offering them a golden handshake, which many refused.

Violent protests ensued and after government pressure built, KESC was forced to take the staff back this week.

Asfandyar | 13 years ago | Reply Since they were initially let go because there was no work for them, how can work be created for them? Especially, when the sacked employees resorted to threats and violence. The govt made a big mistake in forcing KESC to rehire them and the KESC made a mistake by letting all of them go at the same time. If a large number of people have to be made redundant, it should be done tactfully and in a gradual manner so those who are released first have been able to find jobs and those who are released later gain some hope for the future. And so the process continues. Everyone was the loser in this situation: the public, the workers and the KESC. I hope the KESC learns the true lesson from the recent past whilst declaring "we will never forget"!
