Assistant sub-inspector (ASI) Irshad Shaikh was suspended by the Counter-Terrorism Department chief Additional IG Sanaullah Abbasi, who is currently holding the additional charge of Additional IG of Karachi police as Mushtaq Maher is on a one-week leave.
ASI Shaikh was accused of torturing an employee of a CNG station. An inquiry team has been formed, which is headed by Gulberg SP Bashir Brohi. "The officer asked the station's manager to refill his cylinder with CNG despite the fact that CNG stations were closed as per schedule," said SP Brohi. "Then, he apparently tortured him [over refusal]." The inquiry officer said that the incident occurred on Monday but the police took action after the complainant approached them. He added that the accused police officer posted to the investigation wing of the Gulberg police station has been detained and an inquiry will also be completed in 24 hours. The accused police officer will be booked in an FIR formally if he is found guilty in the inquiry.
Separately, Tipu Sultan police station chief SHO Rana Tanvir was also suspended by AIG Sanaullah Abbasi. The officer was suspended following his failure in controlling the rising incidents of street crimes within his police station's jurisdiction.
