HYDERABAD: Hyderabad district’s education department fired two ghost teachers, who are wives of government officials, for drawing salaries without performing their duties.

One of them Najamul Sahar, a primary school teacher, is wife of the examinations controller of Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education, Hyderabad, Masroor Zai. The other, Seema Farhat, is wife of additional civil surgeon at Services Hospital, Karachi, Masood Solangi.

Both Sahar and Farhat were issued identical dismissal orders, which read “... Her [Sahar’s and Farhat’s] reply to final show cause notice was found unsatisfactory and charges [are] established upon her as she is found guilty of being absent from duty.” The order, which was issued by district education officer Muhammad Akbar Memon, imposed the ‘major penalty’ of removal from government service.

According to the letter, Sahar was also issued a show cause notice on March 14, 2016, “on account of continuous absence from duty” under Section 3 of Removal from Service Special Power Sindh Ordinance, 2000.

The final show-cause notice was issued on August 2, 2016. Despite the notices, she was posted at Government Girls Primary School Sir Syed Latifabad Unit 6. However, she allegedly joined the duty for one day on August 28, 2016, and never came back again. She also did not appear at the personal hearing on January 10.

“My wife was on medical leave,” said Zai while speaking to The Express Tribune. “We submitted her medical records in the district education office and got her leave approved.” Zai accused an official in the education department of victimising the teachers. He said his family is filing appeal for restoration of his wife’s service.

Similarly, Farhat was issued a show-cause notice on May 2, 2016, followed by the final show cause notice on August 16, 2016. She also did not attend the personal hearing on January 10.

Farhat was also charged with continuous absence from duty under Section 3 of Removal from Service Special Power Sindh Ordinance, 2000. She was posted at Government Girls Primary School Mehran Latifabad Unit 10. Farhat or her husband could not be contacted for their comments.
