Perth scorch Adelaide by 48 runs

Amass 198 runs before restricting opponents to just 149

A brilliant all-round performance by Perth Scorchers saw them defeat Adelaide Strikers by 48 runs in the Big Bash League at the WACA Ground in Perth on Friday.

Having elected to field first, the Strikers were given a daunting target of 198 runs as Ian Bell (61) and Ashton Turner (44) made the Strikers’ bowlers pay.

Bell smashed four boundaries and two sixes in his 42-ball stay while Turner hit two fours and four sixes in his unbeaten 19-ball knock to allow the Scorchers to reach the 197-run mark.

Meanwhile, Mitchell Marsh and Sam Whiteman contributed with 31 and 22 runs respectively.

For the Strikers, Michael Neser and Chris Jordan claimed two wickets apiece.

In reply, the Strikers were off to a torrid start as they lost both their openers by the third over and the rest of the batsmen could only reach 149 as Mitchell Johnson dismissed three batsmen, while David Willey and Jhye Richardson claimed two wickets apiece.

For the Strikers, skipper Brad Hodge (56) and Kane Richardson (45) were the top scorers.

Meanwhile in the other match of the day, Hobart Hurricanes defeated Sydney Sixers by 60 runs at the Sydney Cricket Ground.

Having been asked to bat first, the Hurricanes posted a mammoth 200 runs courtesy captain Tim Paine and D’Arcy Short’s 81-run opening stand.

Both batsmen made 63 and 61 runs respectively to give their team a strong start and ensure that a strong total is put on board.

For the Sixers, Sean Abbott claimed two wickets for 41 runs.

In reply, the Sixers could only reach 140 runs as Shaun Tair claimed three wickets, while Clive Rose and Hamish Kingston dismissed two batsmen each.

Opener Jason Roy and Sam Billings top-scored for the Sixers with 40 and 42 runs respectively.
