Captain Steven Smith, who top-scored with 130 off 222 for Australia in the first innings, admitted to edging one delivery when he was batting on 97 to wicketkeeper Sarfraz Ahmed off Mohammad Amir at Gabba in the first day-night Test against Pakistan.

The 27-year-old, who earlier nicked one while batting on 53 to Sarfraz off part-time leg-spinner Azhar Ali but got dropped, said no one appealed when he edged one off Amir, hence he decided to stay on the crease.

"I was very surprised, it was pretty loud, obviously I was on 97, there was a fair bit going on in the crowd," Smith told ABC radio on Friday morning. "It was pretty loud, but yeah, I did nick it, and no one went up so I wasn't going to walk."

Australian captain, when asked he pulled off a good poker face, said: "Yeah, I didn't look behind. Not sure why, I just played the ball and it was a bit bizarre that nothing came of it."

Australia all-out for 429 against Pakistan in first Test

Smith, after the over, went up to umpire Ian Gould, who was standing on square leg when the event happened, and admitted to edge it to the keeper.

"I told 'Gunner' Gould at the end of the over: 'I'm pretty sure I hit that one last over,'" revealed Smith. "He said: 'I'm pretty sure you've said that to me before. I reckon it was out here as well.' So it's happened before, you take the good with the bad."

Five things which will decide the first Australia-Pakistan Test

Pakistan, on day two, dismissed Australia for 429 after Peter Handscomb also completed his ton, his maiden century in just his second Test.

Players are currently taking dinner in the day-night Test with Pakistan 20-1. Azhar was the only wicket that fell off an edge to the slips squadron off Mitchell Starc.
