IVS executive director Samina Raees Khan spoke about the changing scenario in the field of liberal arts in Pakistan and how it has gained popularity in recent years. She said Rs2.5 million was given to deserving students at the school this year and promised to give Rs3.85 million to the 19 members of the batch of 2017. Khan told the graduating class to take up new challenges and be a step towards change.

"What sets you apart from the others in the crowd is that you have education," said Jawaid Haider, dean of academics at IVS. "Learn to fight for a job, for your loved ones or even for the world you want to live in," he told the graduates.

"I, as a teacher, am constantly interacting with young ones who want to learn, those who are looking for ways to change the world, for guidance, perhaps even inspiration. I consider my interaction with students a larger process of education; questioning conformist ideas and challenging conventional wisdom," said political economist Syed Akbar Zaidi, who was a guest speaker at the convocation.

Quoting playwright Vaclav Havel, Zaidi said, "Art is simply there to disturb the peace, in order to make all of us very uncomfortable".
