KARACHI: Two more people were convicted on Thursday in the Mauripur murder case as an anti-terrorism court (ATC) concluded the trial against the arrested persons.

Four members of a family living in Mauripur were killed while two others were injured by gangsters in a grisly manner in December, 2013.

According to the prosecution, Muzaffar Baig, his wife, their 27-year-old adopted son and eight-year-old son were murdered while the couple’s 18-year-old pregnant daughter and an infant were injured by gangsters belonging to a notorious group based in Lyari.

The ATC-V judge found Adil Baloch and Abdul Basit guilty of the offence after examining the evidence and testimonies brought before the court by the prosecution during the trial.

The judge handed them life imprisonments on four counts of murder and directed each of them to pay compensation of Rs100,000 to the legal heirs of the deceased.

The court also awarded both of them 10 years imprisonment for attempted murder of the pregnant girl and infant. Adil was given an additional seven year term for possessing an illicit weapon and explosives. In his verdict, the judge observed that a lenient view was taken while sentencing the accused for the murder, since both of them were juveniles at the time of the commission of the offence.

Earlier on Wednesday, another accused, Yasin Baloch, was given capital punishment by the same court for the offences. A fourth accused, Wajid Baloch, was acquitted for want of evidence.

The accused allegedly raped the deceased woman and the surviving daughter before shooting them. However, the rape charges were not proved against any of the four people tried.

A number of suspects are still absconding in the case. They include the younger brother of notorious gangster Baba Ladla. The case against them has been kept dormant by the court.
