KARACHI: Around 20 wedding halls were partially demolished by the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) on Wednesday in District East because its owners  failed to pay the Municipal Utility Charges and Tax (MUCT) despite repeated deadlines.

MUCT senior director Raza Rizvi told The Express Tribune that the operation will continue for three days. Wedding hall owners in District East, he said, have to pay the KMC Rs30 million.

"We have provided them the facility to use our roads in front of the wedding halls," he said, adding that most of the wedding halls have put up their boards on KMC-owned roads and have encroached upon their land. He claimed that if owners of the wedding halls still fail to clear their dues the halls will be sealed. The operation was carried out near Moti Mehal, Abul Hasan Isphani Road, Gulistan-e-Jauhar and University Road.
