Quaid-e-Azam Trophy: Waqas a thorn in Islamabad’s side

Bowler follows up first innings’ five-wicket haul by claiming another five on second day

Lahore Blues’ Waqas Ahmed once again ran riot at the Diamond Ground in Islamabad as he followed up his opening-day five-wicket haul with five more in the second innings to restrict Islamabad to 227 on the second day in the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy yesterday.

The Lahore outfit had resumed their innings on 124-5 and only managed to reach 165 in reply to Islamabad’s 134. Waqas (5-96) and Shahid Nawaz (4-73) then claimed wickets at regular intervals to dismiss Islamabad on 227. Lahore Blues were on 20-1.

Meanwhile at the Arbab Niaz Stadium, Karachi Blues were on 90-2 after dismissing hosts Peshawar, who had started the day on 89-1, for 184 runs as Abdul Ameer claimed five wickets.

Waqas, Bilawal dismantle Islamabad

In the match between WAPDA and HBL at the Multan Cricket Stadium, Muhammad Saad (118) and Salman Butt (112) both scored centuries to steer WAPDA, who had resumed the day on 86-2, to 326-9 at the end of play, while in another match, SSGC were on 256-4 against UBL at the Jinnah Stadium in Sialkot after rain had washed out the first day.

Fawad Alam (108 not out) was on the crease for SSGC.

Qualification battle in full swing

At the Pindi Stadium, hosts Rawalpindi, who had resumed their first innings 96-7, were on 17-4 in their second innings after dismissing FATA, who had made 120 in their first innings, for 136, and still need 87 more runs.

Meanwhile, SNGPL were on 235-5 against PIA in Faisalabad and KRL were 482-9 against NBP in Rawalpindi.
