ISLAMABAD: A police constable died when the service pistol he was cleaning accidentally went off on Monday.

“Jahangir Ahmad was hit in the chest by a bullet from the 9mm pistol and died on the spot,” said a Shehzad Town police station official. While the police initially termed the incident as an accident that occurred during routine cleaning, they have now reassessed the situation and believe that Arms Moharar Abdul Hameed’s is to blame. “He should have removed the bullet from the pistol before handing it over to the constable for cleaning; his negligence is responsible for the incident,” SSP Operations Tahir Alam told The Express Tribune.

A case has been registered against Hameed. The constable was a resident of Azad Jammu and Kashmir who was recently transferred to Islamabad Police. “His body has been handed over to his relatives after an autopsy. They (the relatives) will be compensated as per government rules,” SSP Alam added.
