KARACHI: A police station chief was suspended on Tuesday while an inquiry against him has been initiated following the killing of Ahle Sunnat Wal Jamaat (ASWJ) local leader Maulana Yousuf Quddosi in a 'fake encounter'.

An Orangi Town-based leader of the ASWJ, Quddosi, was killed in an overnight encounter with the police in Manghopir. The police had earlier claimed that they killed a terrorist in an encounter near Ijtimagah Road.

The body was taken to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital and later shifted to a morgue, where Quddosi's family and party identified him. The family and the party claimed that the police killed him in a fake encounter.

"Maulana was taken into custody by personnel in civvies from his house in Orangi Town on April 8," claimed the ASWJ spokesperson. "The family also filed a petition in the Sindh High Court."

Following the allegations, senior police officials suspended Manghopir SHO Ghulam Hussain Korai and initiated an inquiry against him to probe the allegations.

"An inquiry against SHO Korai has been initiated," explained District West SSP Nasir Aftab. "So far we have just suspended the SHO and will take action against him according to the law if he is found guilty in the inquiry."

The funeral prayers of the ASWJ leader will be offered today (Wednesday) in Orangi Town.
