DERA GHAZI KHAN: A schoolteacher tried to commit suicide after he allegedly got upset over behaviour of the principal and education department officials in Dera Ghazi Khan on Sunday.

While speaking to The Express Tribune, Muhammad Ayub Khosa, who recently retired from the service at Government Higher Secondary School, said he served as a teacher for 40 years.

He added that after retirement, he had been visiting the office of Education District Officer (EDO) Irshad Ahmed Tarar and School Principal Abid Hussain Qaiser to get his pension case forwarded and approved by higher officials.

Mystery shrouds Murree teacher's death

“Although I visited them several times and requested the officials concerned to facilitate me, they resorted to delaying tactics and failed to address the matter,” he said.

He pointed out as he needed the money badly he again went to the school but the principal tore his pension documents and threw them in the dustbin. He said, “After the incident, I got disheartened and tried to commit suicide by taking poisonous pills.”

However, his family members rushed him to the Dera Ghazi Khan Teaching Hospital where he was provided first aid. He was later referred to Nishtar Hospital, Multan for further treatment.

Meanwhile, when contacted, the EDO denied knowledge of such a case and said, “I did not receive any pension application of the said schoolteacher,” he added, “All such cases are forwarded to me by the district officer, which are sent to the higher education secretary for approval without delay.”

Murree teacher’s suicide? SCBA contests police claim

Earlier on October 24, a dejected elderly pensioner jumped to his death from Karachi’s Civic Centre building.

Sixty-year-old Muhammad Iqbal, a former Karachi Metropolitan Corporation employee, took his own life as he jumped off six-storeys building after his visit to the centre in connection with a pension issue. New Town police said it was an incident of suicide and the 60-year-old reportedly took his life after being refused release of funds.
