Social support: ‘BISP helping in poverty reduction, school enrolment’

ISLAMABAD: Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK), President Masood Khan, said on Thursday that poverty was a curse and the Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP) was playing a commendable role in its alleviation from AJK.

"The programme has achieved admirable results for poverty reduction, primary enrolment and women empowerment," Masood Khan said while speaking at a plenary conference where the BISP progress report 2014-16 was presented.

BISP Chairman Marvi Memon stated that it has achieved many milestones in the last two years. She said as many as 169,144 households of AJK received BISP stipend on quarterly basis and 34,185 children had been enrolled in Mirpur, Bagh and Kotli under the Waseela-e-Taleem (WeT) initiative.

"BISP has embarked upon Biometric Verification System (BVS) for bringing transparency and efficiency in payment mechanism. Pilot phase of new poverty survey to update National Socio-Economic Registry (NSER) includes Mirpur.
