MULTAN/BAHAWALPUR: A routine polio immunisation campaign will kick off in different districts of the province on Monday (today). The provincial government has constituted various teams to administer polio vaccine to children door to door.

The district administrations will coordinate the immunisation drive with the health department and security would be provided to the polio teams.

In Multan, the polio drive was inaugurated by DCO Nadir Chatta as he administered polio drops to his daughter. “All resources will be utilised to eradicate polio from the province, while those creating hurdles will be dealt with an iron hand,” he said. “It is the duty of all parents to protect their children from disabilities.”

Nadir maintained polio could only be eradicated by administering the vaccines effectively.

Multan Health EDO Iftikhar Qureshi said the polio drive would continue till September 30 in 131 union councils of Multan. He added 1,730 mobile teams were formed to take part in the campaign.

Another 143 teams would be available round-the-clock at railway stations and bus stands, he added.

The official said the health department had constituted 2,068 teams comprising lady health workers and officers of other government departments to vaccinate 811,411 children. The teams will also visit schools to administer polio vaccination to the children.

A three-day polio drive was also inaugurated in Bahawalpur. During the drive, at least 590,000 children will be administered polio vaccines.

Quaid-e-Azam Medical College Principal Prof Dr Ajlal Haider Rizvi inaugurated the campaign at the OPD of Bahawal Victoria Hospital. About 1,344 teams would participate in the drive to administer polio drops in five tehsils of the district.

The inauguration ceremony was attended by Health EDO Dr Shahid Khaleeq, Assistant Commissioner Rao Tasleem Akhter, Health District Officer Dr Saeed Asghar, Bahawal Victoria Hospital Medical Superintendent Dr Rao Javed Akhter and others.
