KARACHI:
With every passing year, the Board of Intermediate Education Karachi (BIEK)'s pass percentage of science faculties is increasing but the results of commerce faculty are not improving.
"It is sad to see that since the last six years, even 50% of the total students in the commerce section have failed to pass," said examinations controller Imran Khan Chishti.
He said this while announcing the results of commerce annual examinations 2016 for regular and private candidates.
"We have made a committee to keep a check and balance on the college attendance," he said, adding that any college which does not submit monthly attendance will not be allowed to submit their examination forms.
He also said that the board will soon change the paper pattern and will focus on short questions more. The chief guest at the event, former federal minister for finance Shaukat Tarin, while encouraging the students, said that today technology has taken over and now there are more career options other than just becoming a doctor, engineer or civil servant [as was the case in the past].
Regular group
The controller of examinations, sharing statistics of the commerce regular group, said that from the total 36,611 registered candidates, 36,245 appeared including 19,654 males and 16,591 females.
Showing concern over the consistent low pass percentage in commerce results since the last few years, he said, "It is upsetting that our students cannot even cross the 50% mark when it comes to the total pass percentage". The pass percentage for commerce regular is 43.69% this year which was 40% in 2015.
The statistics for the commerce examinations also revealed that 94 candidates managed to secure A-1 grades, while 3.03% of the students scored between 70% to 79%.
A total of 2,841 candidates managed to secure B grade while 5,287 got the C grade in their annual examinations.
Aisha Asif from DA Degree College for women, Phase-VIII, secured the first position in the commerce regular. "I want to complete my MBA in finance and was never interested in science subjects," said the student, who secured 954 marks out of a total of 1,100 with 86.73%. She added that commerce is a conceptual field and there is no rote learning in the subject.
Asif's class fellow Ayesha Mubashir secured 936 marks with 85.09% and bagged the third position. "If you are hardworking and your teachers at college are helping than you do not need any tuition for studies," Mubashir said, adding that accounting and economics interest her more in her field.
Meanwhile, the third position holder Muhammad Ishaq from Tabani's college scored 931 marks. He also emphasised on the conceptual questions in the exam papers.
Private group
Announcing the results of the private group, Chishti said that from the total 7,176 registered candidates, 6,975 appeared and 39.60% managed to pass their examinations.
The whole group has only one A-1 grade while 32 students managed to grab grade A and 209 secured grade B.
With 886 marks at 80.55%, Muhammad Muzammil, who is already enrolled in Al Hamd Academy for his CA, secured the first position. The second position was secured by Faiza Rauf at 76.73% while Sana Sikandar grabbed the third position with 840 marks.
