KARACHI: National Accountability Bureau (NAB) chairperson Qamar Zaman Chaudhry decided on Wednesday that the bureau will pursue investigation of cases wherein over Rs100 million are involved.

He decided this while chairing a performance review meeting at NAB, Karachi. "In line with directions of the honourable courts and NAB's own fair thought process, [the bureau] shall pursue to investigate cases wherein an amount over Rs100 million is involved," said a NAB, Karachi spokesperson while quoting the decision of the chairperson.

"However, in particular circumstances [such as] the [Hyderabad Electric Supply Company] HESCO recovery case [and] suspicious transaction cases referred by [the] Financial Monitoring Unit (FMU), the pecuniary limit shall not bar NAB from proceeding against culprits involved in [corruption cases worth] less than Rs100 million."

The NAB chairperson urged upon investigation officers (IOs) to show highest standards of investigations during conduct of proceeding in cases registered at NAB.

He further said that the cases be investigated through Combined Investigation Team (CIT) instead of one IO investigating the case. Because of CIT in place, request by individuals for change of IO is not being entertained in the NAB.

He said NAB is hosting a SAARC Conference on anticorruption measures next week, which is aimed at garnering external support in terms of sharing of expertise and best practices as well as seeking cooperation as and when required.
