KARACHI: The comedy scene in Karachi seems to be picking up pace as more and more stand-up comedians are coming to the fore to try their luck. What is even better is when established artists lend a helping hand to young, up-and-coming talents.

One such example is when Akbar Chaudhry and Syed Osama Sami helped Malik Junaid, lovingly called JD, venture into comedy a few months ago. In a short span of time, this new kid on the block performed 15 shows, including one solo. This time around, he is geared to bring his first-ever solo show titled JD’s Ghante Ka Show to Lahore on Friday.

“I ventured into comedy back in March. I had no plans before that. I graduated in computer science and attempted to establish a start-up but failed,” Junaid told The Express Tribune.

However, it was during his continuous meetings and networking for the start-up that Junaid realised he has a knack for comedy. “Whenever I met people, they used to laugh at my jokes. I had never thought about pursuing comedy as a career before. One thing I learnt from my start-up was that you have to do things despite fear of failure. I took that leap of faith to pursue comedy.”

Admitting he was a troublemaker in his childhood, Junaid would do a lot of crazy things. “I was really a clown. I used to make jokes and entertain people with my mannerisms and characters,” he said.

The comedian covers a variety of topics including social media, the eccentricities of Karachiites and politics. However, hailing from rural Punjab, he brings a vernacular touch to his jokes. “What makes me different is that I bring intelligent comedy in a desi style,” he shared.

When asked what he intends to offer to his Lahore audience, Junaid said he will be focusing on various subjects. “It’s going to be a mix of many things. From social media and Karachiites to the grandiose wedding culture we have here, I will talk about it all.” After staging Ghante Ka Show in Lahore, Junaid plans to head go ahead with an all-Pakistan tour.

Moreover, through his humour, the rising star criticises the hypocritical attitude of his fellow citizens. “My message to everyone is to just keep it honest. In my gigs, I have criticised people who follow politicians blindly, no matter what they do. This is why comedy is the best way to implant your idea in someone’s mind. Humour does it subtly without offending anyone,” he added.

As far as the creative process goes, Junaid comes up with material on the spur of the moment. “I just take notes when it occurs to me and then get it reviewed by peers. My jokes are mostly observational and borrowed from real-life scenarios. It’s about how I see the world.”

Junaid revealed he enjoys to experiment with characters and ideas as well. “I have multiple characters that I perform on stage. There’s one that’s based on my mother who really wanted to be a jet pilot. So it’s interesting to imagine what she would be like if she were a pilot. There are many more characters I have in my pocket,” said Junaid.
