Sanitation: Drive to clear Multan of animal waste, offal concludes

MULTAN: As many as 1,800 sanitary workers took part in a clean-up drive launched jointly by the Multan district government and the Solid Waste Management Company to remove offal and animal waste from across the city.

This was stated by SWMC managing director Ahmad Shehriyar at a press briefing on Sunday. He said the drive had been launched on the directives of Multan DCO Nadir Chattha to ensure hygiene in the city. He said that around 4,000 tons of waste collected during the drive had been dumped at the Habibia Syal land fill site.

He said arrangements for dumping of animal waste and offal had been finalised ahead of the Eid break. The trenches dug for dumping waste had been coated with mud and sprayed with anti-dengue chemicals, he added.

He said the quantity of waste collected in Multan was second in the province only to that collected in Lahore. He said dumping of all the waste in just three days was an achievement.

The SWMC managing director said arrangements for disposal of waste and maintenance of hygiene during Eidul Azha were superior to those undertaken last year. “Latest machinery and state of the art technology was used during the drive,” he said. He said the operation against burning of animal skulls and trotters on roadside had also been successful.
