KARACHI: Unlike the last few years, the city’s main cattle market at Super Highway started to wrap up 48 hours before Eidul Azha, while a shortage of animals was also witnessed.

Spread over 700 acres and divided into 26 blocks, the cattle market witnessed a change in the trend as in the past the market was seen active even in the wee hours of the first day of Eid, but during the last 48 hours the cattle market has been nearly empty.

The market was hardly left with any customers on Sunday night and Monday afternoon.

Meanwhile, cattle market administrator Jehangir Chaudhary said 175,000 animals were brought to the market this year, a figure slightly less than last years’, while only 15,000 to 20,000 were left.

He added that the market will wrap up during the first day of Eid or the second.

Loading the leftover accessories he brought with his animals, Waseem Abro, a cattle trader from Rahim Yar Khan, told The Express Tribune that he brought over 50 cows and sold them all. The market was pretty slow earlier on, but many came in to buy animals after the rain as prices decreased by around 10%, he said.

“I have been looking for a suitable cow for the past many hours, but am unable to find a suitable one as the market is left with only a few animals,” shared a customer, Fahad Khan.

Standing with his three leftover cows, trader Akram Qureshi said he can take them back and prepare them for next year.
