KARACHI: A day after academic activities in public varsities across Sindh were called off, Karachi University (KU) teachers resumed classes on Thursday after holding a rally on campus to continue their protest.

The Federation of All Pakistan Universities Academic Staff Association (Fapuasa), Sindh Universities Officers Society and Sindh Employees Federation are on the same page to fight for the autonomy of the universities, said Karachi University Teachers Society (Kuts) president and Fapuasa general secretary Dr Shakeel Farooqi. He added that for the first time in the past three years, all these federations have united against the Sindh government.

Even though Kuts resumed classes in KU, teachers organised a rally from the university's administration block till microbiology department. Kuts representatives announced in a press conference on Wednesday that they will resume classes but will keep protesting and fighting for the 12 demands that they have submitted before the Sindh government to be fulfilled by September 9.

"Today, the strike was not of the teachers but the non-teaching staff called for a strike, which is why the administrative matters in the departments were disturbed," said Farooqi. He added that after the rally, the employees and teachers resumed their work and classes.

Academic activities in public universities in Jamshoro and Hyderabad also resumed on Thursday after a one-day teaching boycott on August 31, which was observed on Fapuasa's call.

The officers' associations, as well as the lower staff associations of Sindh University, Mehran University of Engineering and Technology and Sindh Agriculture University, supported the call.

The representatives of the teachers' associations told The Express Tribune that the next round of boycott is likely to start after Eid holidays as Fapuasa has given a deadline till September 9 to the provincial government to accept their demands.
