SUKKUR: A patient underwent liver transplantation at Gambat Institute of Medical Sciences (GIMS) in Gambat district, Khairpur, three days ago, making it the first successful transplantation of the hospital.

The procedure occurred after the health facility got approval from the Human Organ Transplantation Authority (HOTA).

The patient, identified as 33-year-old Behram, resides on the border between Sindh and Balochistan. Behram was suffering from hepatitis C, due to which his liver had completely been damaged, said GIMS director Dr Raheem Bux Bhatti while speaking to The Express Tribune. It had become necessary for him to undergo liver transplantation, he added.

Behram's wife donated part of her liver for her husband, giving the man a new life. At present, the patient is in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and he has started walking around the corridor, said Bhatti.

GIMS will continue to provide best available medical care to the ailing people, he added.
