‘Biometric system under consideration’

LAHORE: Federal Minister for Law and Justice (r) Zahid Hamid said on Saturday that the cabinet would review recommendations about use of the biometric system in the next elections.

Addressing a seminar on law reforms organised by the Supreme Court Bar Association, he said that the government welcomed suggestions from civil society and other stakeholders in this regard. He said that the recommendations by the Supreme Court Bar Association would be helpful.  He said that the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) manifesto called for implementation of the recommendations of the Pakistan Law Commission.

He said that a comprehensive law reform package to combat money laundering and regularisation of foreign NGOs had been finalised by the government. The minister said that consensus had been reached on several bills on judges’ pension, electoral reforms, human rights and minorities rights. He said 61 meetings had been held in this regard. Hamid said that a draft bill granting the right of vote to 7 million overseas Pakistanis had been finalised. He said that the government was reviewing the recommendations for civil cases to be decided within a year.  He said that the cabinet would soon approve a proposal of an increase in the number of judges.
