CII may finalise women protection bill on Aug 2
According to Haq, copies of the bill have been distributed among the members for discussion in the meeting
ISLAMABAD:
The Council of Islamic Ideology (CII) is likely to finalise its proposed women protection bill when its members meet on Tuesday, its chairman said on Sunday.
“CII Chairman Maulana Muhammad Khan Sherani has summoned the council’s meeting on August 2, in which the women protection bill proposed by the council will be finalised and final recommendations will be given to parliament,” CII Secretary Dr Ikramul Haq told The Express Tribune.
CII proposes husbands be allowed to 'lightly beat'
According to Haq, copies of the bill have been distributed among the members for discussion in the meeting. He voiced hope that consensus would be developed over the bill. The council, in response to the government of Punjab’s women protection bill, proposed its own bill, which, among other proposals, recommended ‘a light beating’ for a wife who defies her husband’s will.
Haq said the bill has 163 clauses and 31 were discussed during the meeting held in May, while the members will take up the remaining in the August 2 meeting.
Women protection: CII tells members to finalise bill
According to the secretary, the meeting will continue for three days and the CII chairman will give a final note after getting members’ input. He believes that there was nothing controversial in the bill as it was drafted through Islamic injunctions.
The CII’s women protection bill was drafted by Mufti Imdadullah, a JUI-F member of CII.
