Letter to PM: Amnesty concerned over Dr Asim’s detention

AI is concerned that despite being in custody for months the PPP leader has not been brought to trial

KARACHI:
Amnesty International has conveyed to Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif its concerns over the ‘conditions’ surrounding former federal minister Dr Asim Hussain’s detention and his allegations of torture.

In a letter written on April 25, Amnesty International South Asia and South East Asia Director Champa Patel wrote that the organisation is concerned that despite being in custody for many months, the PPP leader has not been brought to trial.

“We urge you to ensure that this trial starts immediately and adheres to international standards of fairness, including Article 14 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights which provides that everyone shall be entitled to a fair and public hearing by a competent ….tribunal,” she said.
