Tears and joy: Matriculation results a mixed bag

KASUR/LAHORE: Getting a distinction in matriculation results, announced this week, would normally be a cause to celebrate. However, for the parents of 16-year-old Arsalan Shafiq, from Kasur, it was but a reminder of the bright child they had lost. Shafiq had drowned in BRB Canal on June 28. He had scored 1022 marks in his matriculation exams. Neighbours of the aggrieved family told reporters that the parents had dissolved into tears upon receiving the result. His mother said that her son had been a diligent student who had always gotten top marks in his classes. “This would have been the best day of my son’s life had he been alive,” said the father.

In Lahore, Aiman Jeet Kour, daughter of Attar Singh, did the Sikh community proud by scoring 1047 marks in her matriculation exams. Kour is the niece of Sardar Bishan Singh, former president of the Pakistan Sikh Gurdwara Prabandhak Committee. “This is the highest anyone from our community in Lahore has scored,” a family friend said.
