Voicing students: Model United Nations conference concludes

With colourful cultural portrayals of countries across the world, the Model United Nations (GMUN) conference provided a platform for students to voice their opinions on important national and international issues. The three-day conference, organised by the Global System of Integrated Studies (GSIS) school concluded here on Saturday.

Global Village was the first day’s main event, in which students prepared booths creatively representing their respective countries’ defining cultural aspects.

The second day was an academic simulation of the United Nations, in which students were divided into six committees to discuss pertinent national and global issues.

The committee on Pakistan National Assembly debated the issue of ‘Kalabagh Dam’. The delegates agreed that the dam’s construction is crucial for Pakistan’s economy, but remains a politically controversial issue. They recommended construction of small dams like Basha Dam.

On the third and final day, the resolutions were further discussed and then passed. This was followed by a colourful closing ceremony in which prizes were distributed among students for their outstanding performances. Hannan Riffat was declared the best delegate of the whole event, while Ahsan Shahid, Dastagir Nawaz Khan, Taimoor Ali Mangi, Anita Mehmood, Usman Ahmed and Zarak Khan were also awarded best delegate awards. The Best Diplomat awards were given to Minahil Abbasi, Aqsa Noor, Maheen Ahmed, Ammar Anwar, Maaz Rasool and Salman Niazi.
