LAHORE: Legendary folk singer Shaukat Ali suffered a heart attack while en route to the US on Thursday night. Rushed to the hospital in a critical condition, Ali is now on the path of recovery.

He was in transit to Washington DC at Abu Dhabi airport when he was taken to the hospital. “My father was travelling to the US to partake in some recordings in connection with August 14. He has prepared some new patriotic songs,” Ali’s son Mohsin told The Express Tribune. “He also had to travel to other locations in the US but after the incident in Abu Dhabi, doctors have advised him against singing until he has recovered fully.”

According to Mohsin, family members are by his side at the hospital where his angiography has already been carried out. “My father has done a great service to this country and thousands have learnt music from him. We are all praying for his good health.”

“Of course, the tour has been cancelled after the angiography but luckily, he is in good shape. Our father was very enthusiastic about this tour; we have always seen him most active when recording,” said Ali’s other son Imran. “Mohsin and I are worried about his health of course. He is an asset to us and the country. We are hopeful that we can participate in recordings for Independence Day once he is back.”

This is not the first time Ali has experienced heart problems. He had undergone cardiac treatment in 2005 as well.

Ali is most known for the 1965 Indo-Pak war anthem Jaag Utha Hai Sara Watan. Part of the film Mujahid, the song was written by Hamayat Ali Shair and composed by Khalil Ahmad. In an earlier interview, the 76-year-old had said September 6 still gives him an adrenaline rush. “Every passing day reminds me of our zeal back then. I made a lot of music but the war effort brought me centre stage,” he had said.
