Olivia Rodrigo unveils raw new ballad in secret LA show
No-phone gig with Weyes Blood offers first glimpse of emotionally charged upcoming album

Olivia Rodrigo has unveiled a new, emotionally charged track during an intimate Los Angeles performance, offering fans an early glimpse into her forthcoming album while deepening anticipation around what promises to be her most introspective release yet.
The singer debuted the song live at a closed-door show at The Echo on April 24, where phones were banned and attendance strictly limited, creating a rare, unfiltered listening environment.
Joined on stage by Weyes Blood, Rodrigo introduced what attendees described as a "heartbreaking ballad" centred on longing and emotional vulnerability.
Fans present at the performance characterised the track as a slow, yearning plea, with Rodrigo "begging someone to stay", reinforcing the melancholic undertones she has hinted at for her upcoming third studio album, 'You Seem Pretty Sad For A Girl So In Love', set for release on June 12.
On Instagram, Rodrigo wrote, "I love this song so much!!! It's the first chapter in the story of 'you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love' and it makes me wanna skip around and roll the windows down and make out!"
The surprise debut follows the rollout of the album's lead single 'Drop Dead', which Rodrigo first performed during a high-profile appearance at Coachella alongside Addison Rae. The track was later released with a visually striking music video directed by Petra Collins and filmed at the Palace of Versailles.
'Drop Dead' has already proven a commercial success, securing Rodrigo her fourth UK number one single, according to the Official Charts Company. The achievement places it alongside her previous chart-toppers 'Vampire', 'Driver's Licence' and 'Good 4 U', further cementing her position as one of pop's most consistent hitmakers.
Beyond large-scale festival stages, Rodrigo has also embraced more intimate performances to showcase her new material. She recently made a surprise appearance at an open mic night in New York, delivering a stripped-down rendition of 'drop dead' with minimal instrumentation, underscoring the song's emotional core.
Despite the growing buzz, details surrounding the full track list of the upcoming album remain limited, though it is expected to include 13 songs. Rodrigo has previously suggested that even her love songs tend to carry a melancholic edge, a theme that appears to continue in the newly debuted track.
The Los Angeles performance has also fuelled speculation that the song may feature in her upcoming appearance on Saturday Night Live, where Rodrigo is set to serve as both host and musical guest on May 2. The appearance marks her hosting debut, following earlier performances on the show in 2021 and 2023.
As anticipation builds, Rodrigo's evolving sound - blending vulnerability with sharp lyrical storytelling - appears poised to shape the next phase of her career, with early live previews suggesting an album that leans further into emotional complexity while maintaining her signature pop sensibility.
