LAHORE:
The Punjab Emergency Service (Rescue 1122) responded to 7,039 emergencies and rescued 8,080 people across the province during Eid Holidays.

“Ambulance, rescue and fire services responded to 3,554 emergencies related to road accidents; 2,527 medical emergencies; 92 fire incidents; 13 building collapses; 203 crime incidents; 22 drowning; and 627 miscellaneous crises,” Rescue 1122 Director General Arshad Zia told a meeting at Rescue 1122 Headquarters.

The meeting was informed that 30 people had died in various incidents during the holidays. The Provincial Monitoring Cell (PMC) told the director general that the plan to provide emergency services on Eid had been prepared in coordination with district administrations concerned.

Under the plan, ambulances and fire services were deployed at some mosques. Mobile teams of emergency paramedics were also deployed at mass gatherings.

Zia was informed that Rescue 1122 had responded to 949 emergencies in Lahore, including 631 road accidents; in Faisalabad the service had responded to 601 emergencies, including 321 road accidents; in Gujranwala it had dealt with 352 emergencies, including 204 accidents; in Multan it had responded to 328 emergencies, including 203 road accidents; and in Rawalpindi it dealt with 244 emergencies, including 132 road accidents.

Zia said the ratio of road accidents usually went up on occasions like Eid. This was a matter of concern for the departments concerned, he said. He said the enforcement of road safety laws should be strict.

“Motorists should not forget that that nothing is more important than human life… they should abide by road safety laws.” He said Rescue 1122 was always ready to rescue those in need but motorists should never put their and others’ lives at risk by resorting to wheelies or to rash driving.

He praised rescuers for working during the holidays. He urged them to perform their duties with the same zeal during the flood season.
