Tanveer Ahmed, a resident of Dhok Suleman in Sector H-13, worked as a naib qasid at the G-B Council Secretariat, located in the Press Information Department building near Zero Point.
On Wednesday, he pulled out a pistol and fired on Abdul Razzaq, a section officer. Razzaq received a bullet injury to his rib and was taken to a hospital. Meanwhile, co-workers overpowered Ahmed and turned him over to Aabpara police. Police recovered two pistols from Ahmed and booked him for attempted murder, a non-bailable offence punishable with imprisonment for up to eight years and a fine.
Police said Ahmed had applied for a post of the clerk within his office and was angry with Razzaq, who had reportedly favoured another candidate for the job instead of Ahmed.
Judicial Magistrate Naseer Ahmed on Friday sent the suspect on a 14-day judicial remand and directed the police to produce him before the court again on July 15.
PIMS rape case adjourned
A sessions court on Saturday adjourned a hearing into a rape case against a staffer of the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (Pims) till July 21. Krishan Kumar, the suspect who worked as a male nurse, had allegedly raped a patient in a Pims intensive care unit (ICU) on April 9 this year.
He was booked by Karachi Company police for rape on April 11 and was subsequently arrested from Haripur the next day. He was remanded into police custody for three days and was later sent to Adiala Jail on judicial remand.
Police have submitted a charge-sheet and results of medical reports to the court. Kumar, however, has not been formally charged with the crime yet.
Additional District and Sessions Judge Raja Asif Mehmood had also turned down the suspect’s bail plea on June 22.
In his bail application, Kumar denied the charge against him and also claimed that a medical board constituted by the hospital to probe the matter examined the victim and found that the victim was not subjected to sexual intercourse.
Police officials, however, told The Express Tribune that the medical tests and forensic examination confirmed that the sexual assault took place. They said that the police, during investigation, found that Kumar was guilty of the crime.
Karachi Company SHO Inspector Mubarik Ali said police probe confirmed that the victim was raped.
The victim, who was around 22 years of age and was admitted to Pims surgical ward ICU with multiple health problems died on May 16 at the hospital. The woman was said to be suffering from a rare immune disorder which affects the body’s peripheral nervous system. The disease had affected spinal cord of the woman and paralysed her. She hailed from Swabi district in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa.
Kumar also said in the petition that on July 11 last year, he converted to Islam and changed his name to Muhammad Kabeer, and that he married a Muslim girl a few weeks before he was booked by the police.
