The Sindh government on Tuesday announced a musical institute will be established in the name of late Amjad Sabri in Karachi's Liaquatabad.

Home Minister Sohail Anwar Sial made the announcement as Pakistan People's Party (PPP) chairman Bilawal Bhutto visited the late qawwal's house to offer condolences.

Sial said the incident was being investigated from all angles, hoping there would be an outcome soon.

Police claim headway in Sabri killing probe

Talking to media, Bilawal said he was aggrieved on the Sabri's demise and expressed solidarity with the family.

On Saturday,  investigators claimed to have made a major breakthrough in their probe into the killing as police detained a close aide of the slain qawwal for questioning.

Sabri was shot dead by two motorcycle-borne gunmen, hardly a kilometre away from his home in the Liaquatabad neighbourhood of Karachi on Wednesday. Law enforcers, including Rangers and police, have rounded up more than 100 suspects, including workers of a political party, in a citywide swoop.

Thousands bid farewell to Amjad Sabri

Investigators say they have detained a suspect with alleged links to Sabri’s killers. “We’ve made a major breakthrough in investigations. We will give good news soon,” a senior police official privy to investigations told The Express Tribune.

Earlier, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif announced Rs10 million in financial support to the family of the late qawwal. In a statement issued on Thursday, he said the federal government will also bear the educational expenses of Sabri’s children.

“The loss of Amjad sabri at the hands of coward terrrorists is loss of entire Pakistan. He was genuine aashiq-e-Rasul,” said the statement.

“His contributions through promotion of love and tolerance all around the world are unmatched and unparraled in present time. People of Pakistan loved him and will remember him as a goodwill ambassador of Pakistan around the world.”
