Just when you thought no laptop could be thinner than Apple’s MacBook Air, HP unveiled the Spectre.

Last month, HP INC unveiled the HP Spectre, a MacBook Air-rivalling laptop which the firm claims is the thinnest in the world at 10.4mm thick.  Termed as a ‘marriage of engineering and design’, HP’s Spectre is thinner than MacBook Air’s, 11 and 13-inch models. In fact, it is even thinner than the 0.52 inch ultra-thin MacBook.

Spectre, which is a 13-inch diagonal laptop, weighs just 2.45 pounds. It is astonishingly over half-a-pound lighter than MacBook Air, which weighs 2.96 pounds.

Using carbon fiber and aluminum craftsmanship along with a two-tone finish, HP gave its device the look and feel of pure luxury. To make the machine thinner, HP drew inspiration from high-end furniture details and used piston hinges, giving a display that opens in smooth motion.

What’s inside

More often than not that lighter and thinner laptop comes at the expense of power and battery life. For $1,169.99, HP’s Spectre comes packed with sixth-gen Intel Core i5 or i7 and for $1,249.99, with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage capacity.

For cooling such a powerful machine, HP used hyperbaric cooling technology from Intel. The system doesn’t just push heat out of the machine, it actually draws in cool air and directs it over the processor, to keep it running at peak performance.

HP ditched the traditional HDMI and full sized USB ports and gave three USB-C (also called USB Type-C) slots on Spectre. Two of these USB-C support Thunderbolt 3 speeds.

Spectre is the first laptop by HP to incorporate a hybrid battery. Four polymer battery cells are distributed throughout the device in order to maximise the battery capacity in this ultra-thin design, giving you up to nine hours of battery life. However, it more or less depends on your usage but is still a lot better than other laptops.

Spectre has a full HD screen resolution of 1920 x 1080, which is lot sharper than MacBook Air’s 1440 x 900 resolution. For better sound quality, HP gave speakers on both sides of the keyboard.
