LAHORE: All arrangements should be made in advance to cope with monsoon rains and possible floods, Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif said on Saturday.

He was reviewing arrangements for the upcoming monsoon season.

“The departments concerned should remain alert and provincial and federal institutions should work in a coordinated manner. Arrangements should be made this year to handle any emergency,” he said.

The chief minister directed the departments concerned to perform their duties with effective coordination.

He said that the Cabinet Committee on Floods should keep a close contact with Meteorological Department and obtain latest information regarding weather situation on daily basis.

He said that government departments should evolve an emergency plan with regards to rains and possible floods. The chief minister directed that construction and repair of embankments should be completed as soon as possible. “I will personally monitor arrangements to take care of monsoon rains and possible floods,” he said.

The CM directed the Health Department to arrange medicines, especially anti-snake venom, needed in flood situations. “Civil Defence organisations should remain active to meet any untoward situation,” he said.

The CM said that inspection of embankments and spurs should be completed at the earliest. “The cabinet committee should take action against those who illegally breach embankments,” he said. The CM said that modern methods should be adopted for strengthening embankments and spurs.

Gujranwala incident

The chief minister took notice of the humiliation and beating up of a couple in Gujranwala and sought a report from the RPO. The chief minister said that action should be taken against those who took law in their own hands.

World Day against Child Labour

“Training, education and proper care of children is essential for progress and prosperity of the country. Society as a whole should play its role to eliminate child labour,” the CM said.

In his message on the World Day against Child Labour, the chief minister said that the purpose of observing the day was to rid the country of child labour and provide the opportunity to receive education. “The government has undertaken effective legislation for curbing child labour and made comprehensive measures for this purpose,” he said.

He said that a vigorous campaign was continuing successfully for elimination of child labour from industrial and trade organisations, especially brick kilns.

“Child labour at hotels, workshops, petrol pumps and factories is decreasing. Soon it will be rooted out,” he said.

He said that efforts for elimination of child labour would continue. “It is the government’s objective to completely eradicate child labour. No effort will be spared in this regard. The World Day against Child Labour demands that all segments of the society play their due role in this regard so that this evil can be curbed,” he said.
