KARACHI:
The All Pakistan Mutthaida Students Organisation (APMSO), a student wing of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM), commemorated on Saturday its 38th Foundation Day. The celebrations were held at the Lal Qila ground.
“Established in 1978 by [MQM chief] Altaf Hussain, APMSO has served as the backbone of the MQM,” said MQM spokesperson Aminul Haq, who joined the student wing in 1979. “It functions as a nursery for the MQM where tomorrow’s leadership is groomsed.”
Haq listed some prominent members of the MQM who started their political careers with APMSO. The list includes MNA Dr Farooq Sattar, former deputy mayor Mateen Yusuf and MNA Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui.
The purpose of today’s commemoration is to clearly pledge unconditional support for Altaf Hussain in these trying times, said APMSO’s current chairperson Sarfaraz Siddiqui, who is a Master’s student at Sir Syed University. Siddiqui pointed out that students from nearly 100 universities and colleges were attending Saturday’s celebrations.

The young man hopes that the ban on student unions is lifted so that students are able to become a part of the political process. If such hurdles are removed, Siddiqui plans to expand APMSO and serve students across Pakistan.
Mentioning some of their achievements, he pointed out how the APMSO organised the City Olympics in 1991 and, more recently, a career fair at Expo Centre in 2012. The APMSO has always led from the front and fought for the rights of students, such as demands for increased access to education, he said. The student group also played the role of spreading the ideas and vision of the MQM to the younger masses, he pointed out.
