While speaking to The Express Tribune, a senior police official said they had asked the government to upgrade a constable from BPS-5 to BPS-7. Similarly, a head constable serving in the BPS-7 rank should be upgraded to BPS-9. Also, an ASI in BPS-9 should be upgraded to BPS-11, officers demanded. “It will not cause a marked increase in their salaries, but will definitely benefit them at the time of retirement,” he said.
There are at least 50,000 constables, 8,000 head constables and 2,773 ASIs in the provincial police force. Another police official said, “We requested the provincial government to upgrade these personnel just like teachers and other government officials, but our demands were rejected.”
Commendable job: IGP rewards top performing policemen
“A constable is the nucleus of the police force and works for 12-14 hours a day at distant check posts without any electricity,” said another police official. He acknowledged the life of a head constable or an ASI were equally difficult.
“It is these low-ranking policemen who bear the brunt of the war-on-terror and work in highly hostile conditions,” he added. He also said their demands were justified because their responsibilities and duties are very tough. “Wearing a four-kilogramme bulletproof jacket in the summers and carrying a loaded AK-47 for several hours at a check-post on GT Road is not a child’s play,” he said.
Establishment AIG Najeebur Rehman Bugvi told The Express Tribune the department prepared a summary for the upgradation and it was sent to the provincial government for approval.
