World Tumour Day: Research improving treatment: Ikram
Dr Ikram said that some types of tumours were curable if detected early and diagnosis was possible

Latest research has led to an improvement in the treatment and recovery rate of tumour patients, said Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (Pims) Vice-Chancellor Dr Javed Ikram, while speaking to a television channel on Wednesday. The “World Tumour Day” is being observed since the year 2000 to try to highlight the importance and severity of the disease. Dr Ikram said that some types of tumours were curable if detected early and diagnosis was possible through a contrast CT scan. He explained that surgery was one mode of treating a tumour. The Pims vice-chancellor said that sometimes, when the whole tumour could not be removed, experts go for radiation as further treatment of the illness. He further added that an MRI scan of the brain helps the doctors get better detail of the size and location of the tumour, and its exact relation with blood vessels and eloquent parts of the brain such as speech, arm, face, and leg areas.
