KARACHI:
The Rangers informed the Sindh High Court (SHC) on Tuesday that Nisar Morai, the former chairperson of Fishermen Cooperative Society (FCS), was under preventive detention for his suspected links with terrorists.

The counsel for the paramilitary force submitted this before the SHC bench, headed by Justice Aqeel Ahmed Abbasi, in reply to a petition filed by Morai's wife, Seema, against the preventive detention.

The former FCS chairperson, who is said to be closely linked with the top leadership of Pakistan Peoples Party in Sindh, was grilled for 90 days by the paramilitary force on March 16 for his alleged involvement in terrorist activities. He is allegedly involved in running an extortion ring at the FCS and also in the funding of alleged gangsters and militants belonging to proscribed organisations. The estimate of the money involved in these alleged crimes runs into more than Rs300 million a month.

His wife, however, challenged this detention in the SHC, contending that it was illegal. According to Seema, her husband was picked up by law enforcement agencies on March 10 and disappeared for six days. She says that the charges levelled against her husband are false.

The Rangers attorney told the judge that Morai was being questioned by a joint interrogation team and its report will be presented as soon as the process is completed. He also asked the judge to dismiss the petition as, according to him, it was not maintainable. The judge, accepting the paramilitary force's reply, adjourned the hearing till July 22.
