Under the Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT) Local Government Act, 2015, around 43 out of 70 CDA departments will be devolved either completely or partially to the Islamabad Metropolitan Corporation, while, some 75 per cent or around 10,000 CDA employees will also to transferred to the local set up.
The CDA labour union claims that the government has ensured no job protection to the employees who will be transferred to the IMC. “Whether or not they will be given the same perks and privileges, which they are currently availing at the CDA? The federal government has given no assurance about it,” CDA Labour Union General Secretary Chaudhry Yasin said.
Former Senator Syed Zafar Ali, who had contested ICT local government elections but lost to an independent candidate, while addressing the protesters suggested that instead of bifurcating the CDA and its overall control should be given to the IMC.
“Necessary amendments should be made to the ICT local government act extending the overall control of the CDA to the IMC,” Shah said.
Chaudhry Yasin said that the CDA labour union had continuously been raising the issue with relevant ministries and departments but no one seemed interested to address reservations of 10,000 employees, who “are extremely worried about their future and job protection”.
“We dispatched letters to all federal ministers, members of parliament, and other notables over the issue, but no one bothered to respond,” Yasin said adding that the situation forced them to take to the streets.
Due to the protest, the Aabpara Chowk remained blocked for traffic for almost two hours.
