ISLAMABAD: Imran Khan has voiced concern over the prime minister’s decision to preside over the meetings of the federal cabinet and the National Economic Council (NEC) through a video link to approve budgetary proposals.

“The PM’s decision to preside the NEC meeting through a video link raises apprehensions,” the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI) chairman said in a statement issued on Monday. “Spy agencies could have easily intercepted sensitive information about the economic planning of our country.”

He said sensitive information of the country was kept secret before its publication, but the PM had compromised on national interest because of his ailment and absence from the country.

Nawaz had earlier presided over the meeting via video conferencing from the Pakistani High Commission in London. The chief ministers of all four provinces and G-B were also present at the meeting. The premier is set to undergo an open-heart surgery in London on Tuesday.

Imran said the prime minister’s decision to preside over NEC meeting through an “insecure” network raised serious concerns. “The way the ruling PML-N is running the state of affairs, there is no precedent in any democratic country in the world.” Nawaz’s illness has already stirred up a constitutional debate on who will run the government while the premier undergoes the heart surgery and recuperates in a London hospital.
