PIA may be involved in Rs 1bn fraud

KARACHI:
A scandal seems to be brewing as the Auditor General of Pakistan points out an embezzlement of more than one billion rupees in the audit report of the Pakistan International Airlines.

According to PIA's audit report of the year 2009, an embezzlement of more than 30 million rupees was observed in the purchase of Zam Zam water. Authorities purchased one hundred and forty thousand plastic cans of zam zam water. Each can costed 22 rayals.


Interestingly, the same cans are sold for 10 rayals during Hajj.

The report also outlined a loss of fifty million rupees suffered by the national exchequer. The money was squandered in the maintainence of the offices of the PIA secretariat.
