ISLAMABAD: The interior ministry has formally announced extension of the Rangers’ policing powers in Karachi for another 77 days effective from May 4.
The interior ministry notified the decision on Monday on a May 3 request from the Sindh Home Department. According to the notification, the Rangers’ powers are in continuation of the ministry’s February 3 notification No 9/1/95-R (Sindh). The powers are conferred upon the Rangers (Sindh) under clause (1) of Sub-section 3 of Section 4 of the Anti-Terrorism Act of 1997.

Earlier, the Sindh chief minister had signed the summary of extending the Rangers powers under the anti-terrorism law for 77 days on the recommendation of the home department. The federal cabinet had empowered the Rangers to lead a targeted operation with the support of police against criminals in Karachi.

After the launch of the operation against militants and criminals in September 2013, the paramilitary force was granted special powers to arrest and conduct raids. They are also allowed to detain suspects for up to 90 days.
